sarutobi asuma

Asuma Sarutobi (猿飛 アスマ Sarutobi Asuma) is the leader of Team 10 and son of Hiruzen Sarutobi. He had a falling out with his father when he was younger, and briefly left Konohagakure in protest. The two had not completely reconciled by the time of the Hiruzen's death. Asuma is usually seen smoking a cigarette, but will temporarily drop the habit when something is bothering him, such as when his father died. Among all his students, Asuma shares a particularly close relationship with Shikamaru Nara, and the two often play shogi or go together. Asuma frequently appears alongside Kurenai Yuhi, leading many characters to assume the two are a couple. Both deny this and promptly try to change the subject whenever it is brought up. During Part II of the series, however, Kurenai is revealed to be pregnant with Asuma's child, making their relationship clear. In battle, Asuma wields trench knives that can be infused with chakra. When infused with his wind-based chakra, Asuma can extend the blades' length and easily pierce through rock. After Asuma is killed by Hidan, a member of the criminal organization Akatsuki, these knuckles fall into Shikamaru's possession, and he uses them to defeat Hidan and avenge Asuma. Asuma's seiyū in the Japanese anime is Jūrōta Kosugi, and he is voiced by Doug Erholtz in the English adaptation.

jiraiya

Jiraiya (自来也) is a Konohagakure ninja and one of Naruto's teachers. Kishimoto has commented that out of all the master-pupil relationships he has created in the Naruto series, the bond between Naruto and Jiraiya is his favorite, noting that it makes drawing them "worthwhile". As a child, Jiraiya was under the tutelage of the Third Hokage, along with his teammates, Tsunade and Orochimaru. Jiraiya is known throughout the Naruto world as the "Toad Sage" (蝦蟇仙人 Gama Sennin) due to his toad-related jutsu. Although still affiliated with Konohagakure, he spends much of his time traveling. Jiraiya's personality is openly lecherous, and he proudly describes himself as a "super pervert", authoring a series of best-selling adult romance novels. During Part I, he takes Naruto as his student, and returns him to Konohagakure in Part II as he begins to keep tabs on the movements of the criminal organization Akatsuki. In the Japanese anime, Jiraiya is voiced by Hōchū Ōtsuka, and his English voice actor is David Lodge.

chiyo

Chiyo (チヨ) is an adviser to Sunagakure who is introduced at the start of Part II. She is mistrustful of other ninja villages, making treaties as a formality and quietly strengthening Sunagakure's military might simultaneously. During the various ninja wars, she used her knowledge of poisons to aid Sunagakure, only to have many of her efforts nullified by the work of Tsunade. She is a skilled puppeteer and taught her grandson, Sasori, everything she knew. When Deidara defeats and kidnaps Gaara, the leader of Sunagakure, in Part II, Chiyo joins a group of Konohagakure ninja in rescuing him. After the alliance catches up with the kidnappers, Chiyo, with the help of Sakura Haruno, is able to confront and kill her grandson Sasori. Despite their efforts, Gaara also dies before they can rescue him. Touched by the genuine bond formed between Sunagakure and Konoha, Chiyo gives up her life to revive Gaara, hoping that the relationship of peace might be continued. In the Japanese anime, her seiyū is Ikuko Tani, and in the English version her voice actor is Barbara Goodson.

hatake kakashi

Kakashi Hatake (はたけ カカシ Hatake Kakashi) - where Kakashi is literally Japanese for "scarecrow" - is the leader of Team 7 and the sensei of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. Kishimoto had originally intended for Kakashi to be introduced earlier in the series than he actually was, and created him as an easygoing person that would be able to keep the members of Team 7 in check. Kakashi treats his leadership position with a detached manner, and is consistently late to meetings as a result. In a gaiden on Kakashi's past, this is shown to be the result of an incident in which he witnessed the death of one of his teammates, Obito Uchiha, who gave Kakashi his Sharingan eye and imparted many of his habits, including his tardiness. With Obito's Sharingan, Kakashi has amassed a reputation as a skilled and powerful ninja, earning the moniker "Copy Ninja Kakashi" (コピー忍者のカカシ Kopī Ninja no Kakashi). Although he mentors all three members of Team 7 early in the series, he concentrates on training Sasuke as the series continues, teaching him his Chidori technique; however, he is unable to prevent Sasuke from leaving the village to seek Orochimaru for greater power. Kakashi's seiyū in the Japanese anime is Kazuhiko Inoue, and his English voice actor is Dave Wittenberg.

hyuga hinata

Hinata Hyuga (日向 ヒナタ Hyūga Hinata) is a member of Team 8 who suffers from a lack of self-confidence throughout the series. She is always reluctant to speak her mind or to do something that might antagonize another character, causing her difficulties whenever she is on a mission. This results in her effective expulsion from the Hyuga clan even though she is the eldest daughter of the clan's leader and thus its heiress. Hinata's inability to stand up for herself caused her father to disown her at a young age, leaving her in the care of her teacher, Kurenai Yuhi. Soon after her introduction, Hinata begins training to become stronger, both to overcome her own weaknesses and to prove her worth to her father. Her efforts begin to prove successful towards the end of Part I, as her father takes a greater interest in her training.
Though Hinata's training has in large part been to prove herself, she also trains to try and win the attention of the series protagonist Naruto Uzumaki. Inspired by Naruto's confidence and determination, Hinata becomes infatuated with Naruto to the extent that she immediately blushes or faints upon seeing him. However, as the series progresses, she goes out of her way to help him. While Hinata is hesitant to openly admit her feelings for him, most characters are aware of her feelings. In the anime, Hinata's attempts to impress Naruto result in her creation of a new ability capable of instantly blocking or attacking anything in her extended field of vision. During Part II, Hinata finally admits her feelings to Naruto while protecting him from Pain; as yet, there has been no follow up to her confession. Her seiyū in the Japanese anime is Nana Mizuki, and her English voice actor is Stephanie Sheh.

akimichi choji

Choji Akimichi (秋道 チョウジ Akimichi Chōji) is a member of Team 10 who is typified by his deep love for food to the extent that he always has a snack with him during the series. Though his habit of always eating gives him a relatively large appearance, Choji insists he is not fat, instead using explanations like being "big-boned". If someone refers to him as fat, Choji instantly becomes hostile and increases his resolve to battle. Shikamaru Nara has never found an issue with Choji's weight, instead choosing to look upon Choji's inner strength. Because of this, Choji regards him as his best friend, stating he would willingly give his life to defend Shikamaru. In battle, Choji can increase the size of his body to improve the amount of damage his strikes deal upon impact. His seiyū in the Japanese anime is Kentaro Ito and his English voice actor is Robbie Rist.

inuzuka kiba

Kiba Inuzuka (犬塚 キバ Inuzuka Kiba) is a member of Team 8 characterized by a number of dog-like traits such as being very protective of his teammates and super sensitive and extremely keen senses such as smell . Most apparent of his connection to dogs is the constant presence of his ninja dog (忍犬 ninken), Akamaru. Kiba is fiercely loyal to Akamaru, unwilling to abandon him and putting himself in harm's way for Akamaru's sake. In exchange for Kiba's devotion, Akamaru fights with him in battle; he uses his heightened senses to Kiba's advantage, and helps to double-team opponents with volleys of physical attacks. Since Akamaru is naturally better equipped for combat, Kiba usually modifies his own abilities at the start of a battle, growing claws and traveling on all four limbs to increase his speed. He can also drastically increase his sense of smell, and by the second half of the series he can use it to track things dogs cannot. Kiba's seiyū in the Japanese anime is Kōsuke Toriumi, and his English voice actor is Kyle Hebert.

nara shikamaru

Shikamaru Nara (奈良 シカマル Nara Shikamaru) is one of the members of Team 10. Creator Kishimoto has noted that he "likes" Shikamaru due to his easygoing nature despite being a genius, and contrasted him against Sasuke Uchiha's intelligent but abrasive personality. Shikamaru's intelligence is such that Asuma Sarutobi, Team 10's leader, has never been able to defeat Shikamaru at games such as shogi or go, and he can devise complex strategies even in the heat of battle. However, his laziness frequently prevents him from effectively utilizing his intelligence. Shikamaru is a longtime friend of Choji Akimichi, his fellow Team 10 member, as he chooses to look upon Choji as a person rather than only considering his large girth. In battle, Shikamaru can manipulate his shadow, and by extending it into another person's shadow he can force the target to mimic his movements. In the Japanese anime, Shikamaru's seiyū is Showtaro Morikubo, although Nobutoshi Canna acted as a stand-in for Morikubo in episode 141. His English voice actor is Tom Gibis.

kankuro

Kankuro (カンクロウ Kankurō) is the second oldest of the three siblings. For the first half of the series, he is frequently at odds with Gaara, though he tends to hold his tongue for fear of being killed. In Part II, once Gaara begins to reveal his dreams and motivations to Kankuro, Kankuro becomes very protective of Gaara; he lashes out at anyone who speaks poorly of Gaara and when Gaara is kidnapped, he readily risks his life to save him. Kankuro is a talented puppeteer, and has thus far been shown to have three puppets in his arsenal: Karasu (, lit. Crow), Kuroari (黒蟻, lit. Black Ant), and Sanshōuo (山椒魚, lit. Salamander). Crow is used for offensive purposes, Black Ant traps opponents in its body to make them easier targets, and Salamander protects Kankuro and his allies from enemy attacks. The puppets are all destroyed by their original creator, Sasori, in Part II. Kankuro is later seen using Sasori's body as his new puppet. In the Japanese anime, his seiyū is Yasuyuki Kase, and his English voice actor is Michael Lindsay.

gaara

Gaara (我愛羅) is the youngest of the three siblings. He was created by Kishimoto as a foil to Naruto Uzumaki, with a similar background yet a highly divergent personality. Before Gaara was even born, his father intended to make him a military weapon for Sunagakure by sealing the One-Tailed Shukaku (一尾の守鶴 Ichibi no Shukaku), a powerful and dangerous tailed beast, inside him. Similar to Naruto, Gaara was tormented by his fellow villagers for being the host of a tailed beast. After one of his few remaining relatives tried to kill him, Gaara developed a sadistic and withdrawn personality, killing others to affirm the value of his existence. His battle with Naruto during the invasion of Konoha changes this mentality; as a result, he becomes more willing to help others as the purpose for his existence, and he succeeds his deceased father as Sunagakure's Kazekage during Part II. Gaara's seiyū in the Japanese anime is Akira Ishida, and his English voice actor is Liam O'Brien.

maito gai

Might Guy (マイト・ガイ Maito Gai) is the leader of Team Guy, and dedicates most of his time to only one of his students, Rock Lee. Because of Guy's dedication to him, Lee has modeled himself in his master's image, mimicking Guy's distinctive green jumpsuit and shiny bowl haircut. Lee has also adopted many of Guy's mannerisms, including his "My Rules" philosophy, which involves setting tough self-imposed penalties for failure in the belief that the punishment will make him stronger. Series creator Masashi Kishimoto likens Guy's passionate personality to that of a physical education teacher he had in junior high school, but notes that the teacher was not a model for Guy's character.
In battle, Guy specializes in physical attacks, which he constantly tries to teach to Lee. While Lee is forced to concentrate on physical attacks due to his inability to use other types of techniques, Guy deliberately chooses not to use techniques other than physical attacks. When not teaching Lee a new ability, Guy is usually found in competition with his self-proclaimed rival, Kakashi Hatake. Throughout the series, Kakashi has never displayed a particular interest in their rivalry, which only further motivates Guy to defeat Kakashi and his "coolness". In the Japanese anime, his seiyū is Masashi Ebara, and his English voice actor is Skip Stellrecht.

haruno sakura

Sakura Haruno (春野 サクラ Haruno Sakura) is the sole female member of Team 7. Kishimoto created her as the heroine of the series, although he has admitted that he has little perception of what an ideal heroine should be. As a child, Sakura was taunted by other children because of her large forehead, a feature Kishimoto has tried to emphasize in Sakura's appearances. She was comforted by Ino Yamanaka. As the two continued to grow, however, they became increasingly distant due to their shared affection for Sasuke Uchiha. During most of Part I, Sakura is in love with Sasuke, and hates Naruto Uzumaki but begins to like him more during the Chuunin Exams and when he saved her life from the Sand Villages Garra. But after Sasuke leaves the village, she makes Naruto make a lifelong promise to bring him back, allowing the affection to grow. After his 1st attempt is delayed by the Sound Ninja 4, she resolves to become stronger by training with Tsunade. In Part II when Sakura and Naruto are 16, she displays highly developed skills from her training giving her the brutal power and strength of about 10 men, and a more open affection towards Naruto. In the Japanese anime, her seiyū is Chie Nakamura, and she is voiced by Kate Higgins in the English adaptation.

tenten

Tenten (テンテン) is the only female member of Team Guy, and longs to prove that a female ninja can be just as skilled as a male ninja. Of all the Naruto protagonists, Tenten receives the least amount of screen time, such that her only fight in Part I of the manga is almost entirely skipped; the battle's start and her eventual defeat are the only portions shown. Despite her lack of appearances, series creator Masashi Kishimoto favors her design more than those of any of the other female characters he has created. In battle, Tenten specializes in weaponry, ranging from projectiles to close-combat weapons and even explosives by the second part of the series. During a fight she uses the hundreds of weapons kept stored in scrolls she carries with her to bombard opponents with pinpoint accuracy. Tenten uses this expertise to help Neji Hyuga train his defensive techniques, and she holds him in high regard since he can always block her attacks. Her Japanese seiyū is Yukari Tamura, and her English voice actor is Danielle Judovits.

rock lee

Rock Lee (ロック・リー Rokku Rī) is a member of Team Guy and the favorite student of team leader Might Guy. In the ninja academy, Rock Lee was unable to use ninjutsu or genjutsu techniques, but his persistence impressed Guy. Guy spends much of his free time training with Lee to help him accomplish his dream of becoming a respected ninja by using only taijutsu. Lee has adopted several of Guy's habits because of this, such as his wardrobe and his perseverance. Guy has taught him a number of powerful, even forbidden, techniques. Because some of these techniques, such as the ability to open the eight chakra gates, can pose a severe risk to Lee's body, he is only permitted to use them to protect something or someone dear to him.In the Japanese anime and manga, he always utilizes honorifics such as "san" and "kun". In the English adaptations, he never uses contractions. In the Japanese anime, his seiyū is Yoichi Masukawa, and his voice actor is Brian Donovan in English.

uchiha sasuke

Sasuke Uchiha (うちは サスケ Uchiha Sasuke) is one of the members of Team 7. He was created to be a rival to Naruto, as well as a, "cool genius", which Kishimoto believed was an integral part of an ideal rivalry. He is one of the few remaining members of the Uchiha clan along with his brother, Itachi Uchiha, who killed the rest of their family. Due to this, Sasuke's sole desire is to kill his brother, and he develops a cold and withdrawn personality. His interactions with his fellow teammates, especially Naruto Uzumaki, make him focus less on revenge at the start of the series. During an encounter with his brother in Part I, Sasuke is easily beaten, which leads him to leave the village to seek more power from the criminal Orochimaru. His teammates' attempts to recover him from Orochimaru forms a major component of the Part II plot. In the Japanese anime, Sasuke's seiyū is Noriaki Sugiyama, and his English voice actor is Yuri Lowenthal.

NARUTO

Naruto (NARUTO—ナルト—, romanized as NARUTO) is an ongoing Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. The plot tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, an adolescent ninja who constantly searches for recognition and aspires to become a Hokage, the ninja in his village that is acknowledged as the leader and the strongest of all. The series is based on a one-shot comic by Kishimoto that was published in the August 1997 issue of Akamaru Jump.
The manga was first published by Shueisha in 1999 in the 43rd issue of Japan's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Currently, the manga is still being serialized with fifty-one tankōbon volumes released so far. The manga was later adapted into an anime, which was produced by Studio Pierrot and Aniplex. It premiered across Japan on the terrestrial TV Tokyo network and the anime satellite television network Animax on October 3, 2002. The first series lasted 220 episodes, while Naruto: Shippuden, a sequel to the original series, has been airing since February 15, 2007. In addition to the anime series, Studio Pierrot has developed six movies for the series and several original video animations (OVAs). Other types of merchandise include light novels, video games and trading cards developed by several companies.
Viz Media has licensed the manga and anime for North American production. Viz has been publishing the series in their Shonen Jump magazine, and as well as the indidividual volumes. The anime series began airing in the United States and Canada in 2005, and later in the United Kingdom and Australia in 2006 and 2007, respectively. The films, as well as most OVAs from the series, have also been released by Viz, with the first film premiering in cinemas. The first DVD volume of Naruto: Shippuden was released by Viz in North America on September 29, 2009, and it started broadcast on Disney XD in October of the same year.
The manga has sold over 100 million copies in Japan. Serialized in Viz's Shonen Jump magazine, Naruto has become one of the company's best-selling manga series. The English adaptation of the series has also appeared in the USA Today Booklist several times and volume 11 won the Quil Award in 2006. Reviewers from the series have praised the balance between fighting and comedy scenes, as well as the characters' personalities, but have criticized it for using standard shōnen plot elements.

franky ~ shipwright "The Straw Hat Pirates"

Franky (フランキー Furankī), nicknamed "Cyborg" Franky (サイボーグ フランキー Saibōgu Furankī), is the crew's 34 year old shipwright. After his pirate parents abandoned him at age ten, he became an apprentice of the master shipwright Tom along with Iceburg, who later becomes the mayor of Water 7. When Tom was taken away as a criminal by the government for building Gol D. Roger's ship, the "Oro Jackson", Franky tried to stop them. In the attempt, he was severely injured and, in order to survive, had to exchange parts of his body with replacements made of scrap metal, turning himself into a cola-powered cyborg. Franky, thus, gained an artificial body which grants him super-human strength. Its front is heavily armored and insensitive to most attacks, while his back, where he could not reach, remains vulnerable. His body is equipped with a wide variety of weapons, including several guns and an extendable right arm. His stomach contains a refrigerator compartment that can hold up to three bottles of cola to fuel him and his attacks. His personality is also affected by the type of beverage that is stored in his refrigerator compartment. He can use up large amounts of cola in an instant to launch powerful bursts of air from his arms, one such move is called the Coup de Vent. After word of his death had spread, he cast off his original name, Cutty Flam (カティ・フラム Kati Furamu), and became the underground boss Franky. His dream is to build a ship, to become its shipwright, and sail it to the end of the world. To that end, he builds the Straw Hats Pirates' second ship, the brigantine-rigged sloop-of-war Thousand Sunny, and joins the crew. Franky tends to act tough most of the time like saying his catch phrase "SUPER!!" However, Franky can get emotional very easy and start to cry, but then denies it. Franky's current bounty is 44,000,000 Berries. He is voiced by Kazuki Yao as an adult and by Junko Noda as a child in the Japanese version of the franchise. In the English dub, he is voiced by Patrick Seitz as an adult and by Greg Ayres as a child for Funimation.

brooke ~ musician "The Straw Hat Pirates"

Brook (ブルック Burukku), nicknamed "Dead Bones" Brook (デッドボーンズブルック Deddo Bōnzu Burukku) (formerly "Humming" Brook (鼻唄のブルック Hanauta no Burukku)), is the crew's 88-year old musician. He is a living skeleton, resurrected by the Revive-Revive Fruit (ヨミヨミの実 Yomi Yomi no Mi), a paramecia Devil Fruit, which grants its eater a second life. He is an excellent musician, who claims being able to play any instrument, and a skilled fencer, who uses a , a Japanese cane sword, in battle. His lightweight skeleton body allows him to jump extraordinarily high and to run across water. His gentlemanly impression stands in stark contrast to his incredibly bad manners: He bluntly requests to see women's panties, helps himself to people's food, and belches out loud on the dinner table. When Brook's former crew, the "Rumbar Pirates", entered the Grand Line, they left their pet whale "Laboon" behind at Reverse Mountain, promising to return after sailing around the world. Fifty years later, Brook, being the only survivor, considers it his duty to fulfill his former crew's promise.Brook's current bounty is 33,000,000 Berries. He is voiced by Chō in the Japanese version of the franchise. He does not yet have an English voice, as the English dub has yet to reach that far into the series.
The idea of a skeleton musician was first conceived by Oda in the year 2000.

nico robin ~ archaeologist "The Straw Hat Pirates"

Nico Robin (ニコ・ロビン Niko Robin), nicknamed "Devil Child" (悪魔の子 Akuma no Ko) by the World Government is the crew's 28-year-old archaeologist. Growing up alone on the island Ohara (オハラ), home of the world's largest and oldest library, she became an archaeologist at the age of eight and learned how to decipher the writings on the ancient stones called Poneglyph (歴史の本文 Pōnegurifu), which are scattered around the world. After the World Government destroyed Ohara for housing archaeologists along with her returning mother, Nico Olvia (ニコ・オルビア Niko Orubia), researching these stones, Robin spent twenty years on the run, cooperating with various pirates and other outlaws and became a member of Baroque Works nicknamed as "Ms. All-Sunday" (ミス・オールサンデー Misu Ōrusandē, renamed "Ms. Sunday" in the 4Kids dub) at the time, being briefly an antagonist to the Straw Hat Pirates before joining them. Like the scholars of Ohara before her, it is her dream to find and decipher the Rio Poneglyph (真の歴史の本文 Rio Pōnegurifu), which is said to tell the world's lost history. Her devotion to history and its preservation goes so far that she will even risk her life to protect ancient artifacts and buildings. She ate a paramecia Devil Fruit called the Flower-Flower Fruit (ハナハナの実 Hana Hana no Mi), allowing her to create copies of any of her body parts on any surface that she can see. However, if her replicated parts are hurt, she feels the pain on her actual body Robin's current bounty is 80,000,000 Berries. Robin is voiced by Yuriko Yamaguchi as an adult and by Anzu Nagai as a child in the Japanese version of the franchise. In the English dubs, she is voiced by Veronica Taylor for 4Kids and by Stephanie Young for Funimation

tony tony chopper ~ doctor "The Straw Hat Pirates"

Tony Tony Chopper (トニートニー・チョッパー Tonī Tonī Choppā), nicknamed "Cotton Candy Lover" Chopper (わたあめ大好きのチョッパー Watāme Daisuki no Choppā), is the crew's 15-year-old doctor. He is a blue-nosed reindeer who gained human properties by eating the zoan Devil Fruit called the Human-Human Fruit (ヒトヒトの実 Hito Hito no Mi).. The fruit-granted ability allows him to change between three forms. His first and original form is that of a reindeer. In his second form, he has the proportions of a human child, while retaining his antlers, hooves, and fur. In his third form, he looks like a brawny man with fur or gorilla. In addition to his normal transformations, Chopper developed a drug he calls Rumble Ball (ランブル・ボール Ranburu Bōru), which allows him to assume four additional forms for the duration of three minutes. These forms focus on certain aspects of his body to improve his physical abilities. These are broken down into "points" in the original version (renamed "boost" in the English manga and the 4Kids dub) called: guard, horn, jumping, and arm point with the original three becoming walk, brain, and heavy point. If Chopper uses a second Rumble Ball within six hours, he cannot control his transformations. If he uses a third Rumble Ball within six hours of the first, he transforms into a monstrous version of himself and loses all self-control called "Monster Point". He also has the ability to understand other animals' speech, because he is an animal himself. What he is not capable of, however, is hiding his feelings. Chopper's current bounty is 50 Berries. He is voiced by Ikue Ōtani in the Japanese version of the franchise. In the English dubs, he is voiced by Lisa Ortiz for 4Kids, and by Brina Palencia for Funimation.
When creating Chopper, Oda stated that he wanted a mascot who is both cute and fearless. An IGN review of the manga praised Chopper's character as one of the best in the series and said that he was able to be both touching and funny. Chopper ranked in the Top 5 of both Shōnen Jump character popularity polls since the character's introduction. Oda said that the message he wanted to illustrate in regards to Chopper's family situation is that a person who is not blood-related to another person can still be considered as a member of one's family.

sanji ~ chef "The Straw Hat Pirates'

Sanji (サンジ), nicknamed "Black Leg" Sanji (黒脚のサンジ Kuro Ashi no Sanji), is the crew's 19-year-old chef. He knows how it feels to starve from first hand experience, so he will never refuse someone a meal. He has a strong sense of chivalry, because of which, he will never harm a woman, even if he dies. Sanji also seems to keep this code regardless of a woman's appearance. His dream is to find the "All Blue" (オールブルー Ōru Burū, renamed "Great Blue" in the 4Kids dub), a legendary sea, containing every kind of fish in the world. Sanji is also a very skilled fighter who uses only kicks. He said that this is because a chef's hands are his most prized possessions and should not be risked in battle. His fighting style resembles the capoeira. Sanji also has the ability to employ a fire based kick, called "Diable Jamble" (ディアブルジャンブ Diaburu Janbu, spelled as "Diable Jambe" in the English manga) in which he sets his leg on fire by spinning around rapidly, this causes his attacks to be much more powerful, Sanji first used this technique at Enies Lobby. Sanji's current bounty is 77,000,000 Berries. He is voiced by Hiroaki Hirata as an adult and Ikue Ōtani as a child in the Japanese version of the franchise. In the English dubs, he is voiced by David Moo as an adult and Veronica Taylor as a child for 4Kids, and by Eric Vale as an adult and Christine Auten as a child for Funimation. Sanji ranked in the Top 5 of all three Shōnen Jump character popularity polls.

usopp ~ marksman "The Straw Hat Pirates'

Usopp (ウソップ Usoppu), nicknamed "King of Snipers Sogeking" (狙撃の王様 Sogeki no Ō-sama?, renamed "Sniper King" in the English manga), is the crew's 17-year old (now 19 years old due to 2 years in training starting in chapter 598)marksman. His name comes from Uso, which means liar in Japanese, and Aesop, the author of The Boy Who Cried Wolf. He is a liar, talented inventor, as well as a skilled painter and sculptor. His primary weapon is a slingshot, which he uses to fire various kinds of ammunition, ranging from rotten eggs and shuriken to hot sauce, and both flaming and exploding projectiles. Later, he creates himself a large, dial-powered slingshot he calls Kabuto (カブト), with which he is able to outrange even guns. Usopp's father, Yasopp, left his family to become a pirate with Shank's crew when Usopp was still very young. Some time after this, Usopp's mother, Banchina (バンキーナ Bankīna), fell ill. Usopp started telling lies, stating that his father had returned and would be taking them with him. His mother eventually died, but Usopp, in his sadness, continued to lie. Despite all this, he does not blame his father for leaving him, but takes pride in his heritage. He is inspired by Luffy, Zoro and Nami and decides to go out to sea, following his dream of becoming a "brave warrior of the sea". His weakness as a fighter weighs heavily upon him and when after the crew is defeated and almost destroyed by Admiral Aokiji of the Marines, Luffy decides to replace the badly damaged Going Merry, the Straw Hats' first ship, which is given to them by Usopp's friend "Kaya", a girl from his village that he used to cheer up with his lies, Usopp goes so far as to temporarily leave the crew. Usopp's current bounty is 30,000,000 Berries. He is voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi in the Japanese version of the franchise.. In the English dubs, he is voiced by Jason Anthony Griffith for 4Kids, and by Sonny Strait for Funimation.
Usopp ranked in the Top 10 of all three Shōnen Jump character popularity polls. In a 2007 Oricon poll, Usopp was voted the 10th most wanted character to receive a spin off amongst all respondents, and the 5th most popular amongst males In a review of Funimation Entertainment's second DVD release for Mania Entertainment, Bryce Coulter notes that Usopp "brings lots of comic relief to the series", but also comments that he "can be down right annoying at times

nami ~ navigator "The Straw Hat Pirates'

Nami (ナミ), nicknamed "Cat Burglar" Nami (泥棒猫のナミ Dorobō Neko no Nami, renamed Nami the "Navigator" in the 4Kids dub), is the crew's 18-year-old navigator and thief. She has the ability to recognize and analyze even the slightest changes in the weather. She is also an excellent pickpocket. Her dream is to draw a complete map of the world. Throughout the series, Nami fights using a three-sectioned bo staff. Usopp later provides her with a version of this weapon capable of controlling weather, called the Clima-Takt (天候棒 Kurima Takuto, renamed "Climate Baton" in the English manga, and "Weather Forcer" in the 4Kids dub). Even later, Usopp augments the Clima-Takt with dials, making it more powerful. Nami's current bounty is 16,000,000 Berries. She is voiced by Akemi Okamura in the Japanese version of the franchise. In the English dubs, she is voiced by Kerry Williams for 4Kids, and by Luci Christian for Funimation.
Nami ranked in the Top 10 of all three Shōnen Jump character popularity polls. Her backstory has been found to be a "touching story" as it "unfolds with a lot of emotion" by Mania Entertainment writer, Jarred Pine. Pine also mentioned Nami was his favorite character from the series, and satisfied with how the manga showed her past. While reviewing the 8th DVD from Viz Media, Activeanime mentioned Nami is one of the best characters from the series as "She’s got guts, smarts, and can heft a mean punch when needed". Like Pined, Activeanime liked Nami's background and added that his "itty bitty heart went out to her". In the SPJA 2008, Nami was nominated in the category "Best Female Character".
When a reader asked Oda who Nami is in love with, Oda answered that there will not likely be any romance among the Straw Hat Pirates. Oda explained that he does not portray romance in One Piece as the series is a shōnen comic, and the young boys who read the comic are not interested in romance.

roronoa zoro ~ swordsman 'The Straw Hat Pirates"

Roronoa Zoro (ロロノア・ゾロ?, spelled as "Roronoa Zolo" in several versions), named after François l'Olonnais, nicknamed "Pirate Hunter" Zoro (海賊狩りのゾロ Kaizoku-Gari no Zoro, spelled as "Pirate Hunter" Zolo in several versions), is a 19 year old, skilled swordsman who uses up to three swords at once, clutching the third in his mouth. To fulfill a promise he made to childhood friend and rival, "Kuina", he wants to become the world's greatest swordsman by defeating Dracule Mihawk. Before joining Luffy, he made a living by bounty hunting. He joins Luffy's crew in exchange for his aid in escaping execution. He makes it clear that he would turn on his captain if he ever stepped between him and his dream , although during the "Thriller Bark arc" he says that he can't fulfill his dream if he did not help his captain fulfill his. His enormous physical strength is enough to lift a building, as well as inhumanly heavy weights on a regular basis. During a fight with Baroque Works Officer Agent Mr. 1 (Daz Bonez), he learns how to cut through solid steel. He can employ an "Asura" technique which gives him three faces and six arms, thus totaling nine swords. In addition, Zoro can expand the muscle mass of his arms, and emulate some of his sword attacks using his bare hands. He is extremely poor at understanding geographical directions and gets lost very easily. He also sleeps a great deal and loves to drink. Confirmed by Ugore to be the first mate of the Strawhat Crew (chapter 499 page 17 in the manga), Zoro's current bounty is 120,000,000 Berries, making him one of the 11 supernovas. He is voiced by Kazuya Nakai as an adult and Megumi Urawa as a child in the Japanese version of the franchise. In the English dubs, he is voiced by Marc Diraison as an adult and Andrew Rannells as a child for 4Kids, and by Christopher R. Sabat as an adult and  as a child for Funimation.
Zoro ranked second in all four Shōnen Jump character popularity polls. Furthermore, in a 2007 poll by Oricon, Zoro was voted as the 4th most desired character to receive a spinoff. DVD Talk praises Zoro's "hilarious" three-sword fighting style as a great example of the show's sense of humor. Holly Ellingwood from Activeanime praised Zoro's fight against Luffy as one of the best moments from the 10th DVD from the series released by Viz Media, praising the action scenes. Sabat's work with Zoro has resulted in him being a nominated of the category "Best Voice Actor (English)" in the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA) Awards from 2008. Carl Kimlinger of Anime News Network commented on Sabat's work with Zoro as a "standout", noting that Zoro and Sabat are "well-matched. Kimlinger also found that he and Sanji's flashbacks from the anime "really do jerk tears, even if they are less than gracefully executed".

The Straw Hat Pirates

The protagonists of the One Piece series are part of the Straw Hat Pirates, a crew of pirates founded and captained by Monkey D. Luffy. Starting out with Luffy alone the crew's number grows throughout the series as Luffy keeps recruiting new members. The name of their first ship is "Going Merry" (ゴーイング・メリー号 Gōingu Merī-gō, renamed "Merry Go" in the English manga and 4Kids dub), however due to severe damage, the Straw Hat Pirates got a new ship called "Thousand Sunny" (サウザンドサニー号 Sauzando Sanī-gō). Though the Straw Hats are few in number, the level of skill each member possess in his or her role on the ship can easily surpass that of a veteran sailor. The prowess in combat each member possess can easily allow them to become the captain of an average to somewhat skilled group should they choose to do so. The crew went from a little known gang of children, elevating their status as they journey through some of the roughest waters.

monkey d luffy ~ captain "The Straw Hat Pirates"

Monkey D. Luffy (モンキー・D・ルフィ Monkī Dī Rufi?), nicknamed "Straw Hat" Luffy (麦わらのルフィ Mugiwara no Rufi?), is the 17 year-old captain of The Straw Hat Pirates and the main protagonist of the franchise. At first, Luffy does not appear to be very intelligent; his apparent lack of intelligence is the source of his brave attitude towards life. Luffy can easily be amazed by the simplest things. If Luffy finds something he does not understand, even if someone explained in detail, he calls it a "mystery thing". He is, however, an expert when it comes to fighting. When Luffy's friends' lives are threatened, Luffy goes into an unimaginably dangerous rage. In the beginning of the series, he accidentally eats a paramecia Devil Fruit called the Gum-Gum Fruit (ゴムゴムの実 Gomu Gomu no Mi?), causing his body to gain the properties of highly stretchable rubber. These properties are a result of Oda's desire for the fighting style to be silly, so that no matter how tense a situation gets, the reader can relax without becoming stressed out.
Luffy later learns "Gear Second" (ギア2 (セカンド) Gia Sekando?, renamed "Gear Two" in the English manga and "Second Gear" in the Funimation subs), a technique which increases his blood flow and speed instantly. However, "Gear Second" hacks away Luffy's life force dramatically, increasing a chance of having a much shorter life because he is starving his body, though Luffy rebutles, saying that it doesn't matter as long as he saves his friends. After Gear Second wears off, Luffy can recover quickly through replenishing of his nutrient storage.
Later on, Luffy learns how to go beyond "Gear Second" and into "Gear Third" (ギア3 (サード) Gia Sādo?, renamed "Gear Three" in the English manga and "Third Gear" in the Funimation subs). Luffy increases the size of his limbs by biting into his thumb and inflating it hard, transfer the air through his entire body, requiring the torso to act as an interface for his various limbs. Used with his already-strong physiology, this apparently gives his arm more mass and a larger area to attack with far greater strength, but he sacrifices mobility for this strength, as his limbs are now so large that Luffy has extreme trouble moving. To deactivate "Gear Third", Luffy leaves the form by exhaling heavily and causes him to shrink, which is a negative side-effect. The amount of time Luffy spends in his shrunken form is roughly equivalent to the amount of time spent in "Gear Third" mode.
After his life is saved by Shanks when he is seven years old, Luffy decides to achieve the tantamount goals of finding the One Piece and succeeding Gol D. Roger as King of the Pirates.Ten years later, wearing Shanks' straw hat, he sets out to sea to gather a crew and sail the Grand Line, where the One Piece is supposedly hidden. Luffy is also capable of using King Ambition (覇王色の覇気 Haōshoku Haki?). Portgas D. Ace is Luffy's older brother through adoption. Luffy's current bounty is 400,000,000 Berries, as mentioned in several panels in chapter 601 of the series. He is voiced by Mayumi Tanaka in the Japanese version of the franchise. In the English dubs, he is voiced by Bella Hudson for 4Kids Entertainment, and by Colleen Clinkenbeard for Funimation Entertainment. Luffy ranked first in all three Shōnen Jump character popularity polls.

ONE PIECE

One Piece (ワンピース Wan Pīsu?) is a Japanese shōnen manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, that has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since August 4, 1997. The individual chapters are being published in tankōbon volumes by Shueisha, with the first released on December 24, 1997, and the 60th volume released as of November 2010. In 2010, Shueisha announced that they sold over 200 million volumes of One Piece manga so far; volume 60 set a new record for the highest initial print run of any book in Japan in history with 3.4 million copies, being also the first book to sell over two million copies in its opening week on Japan's Oricon book rankings. One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy who gains elastic abilities after inadvertently eating a mystical fruit, and his diverse crew of pirates, named the Straw Hats. Luffy explores the ocean in search of the world's ultimate treasure known as the One Piece and to become the next Pirate King. On his journey, Luffy battles a wide variety of villains and makes several friends.
The series has been adapted into an original video animation (OVA) produced by Production I.G in 1998, and an anime series produced by Toei Animation, which premiered in Japan in 1999. Since then, the still ongoing series has aired more than four hundred episodes. Additionally, Toei has developed ten animated feature films, an OVA, and five television specials. Several companies have developed various types of merchandising such as a trading card game, and a large number of video games.
The manga series was licensed for an English language release in North America by Viz Media, in the United Kingdom by Gollancz Manga, and in Australia and New Zealand by Madman Entertainment. The anime series was licensed by Funimation Entertainment for an English language release worldwide, although the series has been dubbed previously by 4Kids Entertainment. Since its release, One Piece has become one of the most popular manga series of its time in both Japan and North America. It enjoys a high readership, with over 200 million volumes of the series sold by 2010. Reviewers have praised the art, characterization, and humor of the story.

The series begins with a boy named Monkey D. Luffy, inspired by his childhood hero "Red-Haired" Shanks, going on a journey to find the One Piece. Along the way, he organizes and leads a crew named the Straw Hat Pirates. The crew consists of a swordsman named Roronoa Zoro; the navigator and thief Nami; the sharpshooter Usopp; the chef Sanji; the doctor Tony Tony Chopper; the archaeologist Nico Robin; the shipwright Franky; and a musician named Brook.
The crew faces diverse villians such as Baroque Works, Eneru, the Seven Warlords of the Sea and the Marines. The marines are the subordinates of the World Government, who seek justice by ending the Golden Age of Pirates. Many background story elements involve the delicate balance of power between the World Government and the world's most powerful pirate crews, especially the Four Emperors, the four most powerful pirates in the world.
After the death of Luffy's adopted brother Portgas D. Ace and one the Four Emperors named Whitebeard, the Straw Hat Crew undergoes rigorous training regiments. Two years later, the crew regroups at Sabaody Archipelago and they set out on a journey to the New World.
